JJWC - MLK Day of Service

Jan 17, 2022

The Wonderful Westchester Chapter honored the legacy and life of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in the International Day of Service on Monday, January 17th, 2022.

Our community service committee partnered with the YWCA’s Women’s Transitional Homes in White Plains, NY, a program created to uplift and encourage young women who are transitioning back into society to continue to keep hope and faith. The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to devastate so many of our communities, leaving many without homes, jobs, meals and the ability to purchase basic everyday needs.

The JJWC Community Service Committee led by Chair Summer Derrick and Program Event Coordinator Kanika Hugh-Murray, set out to meet some of the needs of these young women in our community. We are proud to announce that through the efforts of the Chapter, one hundred and fifty women who reside at the facility each received self-pamper kits filled with items such as hygiene products, face masks, lip balm, foaming wash cloths, scrunchies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bath soap, hair products, and more. We all know when you look good, you feel good and you are empowered by that confidence, so to help with transitioning into the workforce, our mothers also donated gently used wear to work clothing and outerwear to the women at the facility. Our Mothers also collected and donated warm winter coats, hats, and scarves for men, women, and children which were delivered to Bronx Community College for distribution at The Bronx Armory. Finally, we want to send a very special thank you to the public relations agency First and Last PR and CEO Stephanie Scott-Bradshaw for their generous donation of children’s clothing, winter outerwear, brand new sneakers, and hair care products, all of which were donated to the victims of the tragic Twin Parks fire in The Bronx on January 9. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said “Whatever affects ones directly, affects all indirectly.” As we move forward past MLK Day, our Chapter intends to continue to target our national program thrusts of community service, civic, and legislative awareness. #jackandjillinc #jjeasternregion
